Our Story

Portal BJJ Esperance was founded to bring world-class martial arts training to the south coast of Western Australia. As the first and only full-time martial arts academy in Esperance, we're proud to offer quality instruction in a supportive, ego-free environment for people of all ages and backgrounds.

The Academy

Located at 99 Dempster Street in the heart of Esperance, our academy is home to a growing community of grapplers, strikers, and martial artists. Whether you're training for fitness, self-defence, or competition — Portal is where you belong.

Adults BJJ
Gi-based Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for all levels. Learn takedowns, guard work, submissions, and positional control in a structured curriculum.

No-Gi Grappling
Fast-paced submission grappling without the gi. Focuses on wrestling, leg locks, and modern competition techniques.

Kids BJJ
A fun, safe introduction to martial arts for children. Builds confidence, discipline, coordination, and anti-bullying awareness.

Muay Thai
The art of eight limbs — punches, kicks, elbows, knees, and clinch work. Great for fitness, self-defence, and striking.

MMA
Mixed martial arts combining striking and grappling. Learn to transition seamlessly between ranges and fight under unified rules.

Open Mat
Free rolling and drilling time for all members. Work on your game at your own pace with training partners of all levels.

Matt Jensen began his jiu-jitsu journey in 2011 and joined Portal HQ under Professor David in 2016. Now a brown belt, Matt has dedicated himself to bringing high-level martial arts instruction to regional Western Australia.

His teaching philosophy centres on technical precision, functional movement, and making martial arts accessible to everyone — from complete beginners to seasoned competitors.
